About Arizona Tax Credits

Arizona tax credits allow you to directly reduce your state tax liability dollar by dollar. By contributing to qualifying organizations, schools, or programs, you can lower the amount of taxes you owe while supporting causes that matter to you. These credits can be applied to your state tax return, and, in many cases, any unused amount can be carried forward for up to five years. It’s an effective way to give back and reduce your taxes at the same time.

Arizona offers five different tax credits, and you can donate to as many as you like. Here’s a breakdown of each:

1. Public School Tax Credit

Single taxpayers can contribute up to $200, and married couples filing jointly can contribute up to $400 to public and charter schools (grades K-12).

Donations must be made by April 15th of the following year or before filing your tax return.

You don’t need to have a child enrolled in the school to claim this credit.

Qualifying contributions include fees for extracurricular activities (field trips, arts, sports teams, etc.), even if paid for your own child.

Donations to school organizations like PTAs or clubs do not qualify; payments must go directly to the school or district.

Unused credits can be carried forward for up to five years.

2. Charitable Organization Tax Credit

For 2023, single taxpayers can claim up to $421, and married couples filing jointly can claim up to $841.

For 2024, these amounts increase to $470 for singles and $938 for married couples.

Donations must be made to qualified organizations or umbrella organizations listed on the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) website.

Unused amounts may be carried forward for up to five years.

3. Private School Tuition Tax Credit

There are two credits available:

Contributions to Private School Tuition Organizations: In 2023, singles can contribute up to $655, and married couples up to $1,308. For 2024, these amounts increase to $731 (single) and $1,459 (married).

Certified School Tuition Organization Credit: Once you’ve reached the limit on the first credit, you can claim this additional credit—$652 (single) and $1,301 (married) for 2023; $728 (single) and $1,451 (married) for 2024.

Donations won’t qualify for the credit if designated for your dependent.

The 2023 limits apply to 2023 tax returns, even if the donation is made in 2024.

4. Foster Care Organization Tax Credit

For 2023, singles can claim up to $526, and married couples can claim up to $1,051.

For 2024, the limits increase to $587 (single) and $1,173 (married).

Donations must be made to qualified foster care organizations listed on the ADOR website.

5. Military Family Relief Fund Tax Credit

Singles can contribute up to $200, and married couples filing jointly can contribute up to $400.

Donations must be made to the Military Family Relief Fund administered by the Arizona Department of Veteran’s Services.

Unused amounts cannot be carried forward.

Donations will only qualify if the total contributions to the fund for the year have not exceeded $1 million.

These credits offer a valuable way to reduce your Arizona tax liability while supporting important causes. Make sure to check the ADOR website for eligible organizations.
